Threads of Suspicion
Dee Henderson Pens Another Compelling Cold Case Mystery Evie Blackwell's reputation as a top investigator for the Illinois State Police has landed her an appointment to the governor's new Missing Persons Task Force. This elite investigative team is launched with plenty of public fanfare. The governor has made this initiative a high priority, so they will have to produce results--and quickly. Evie and her new partner, David Marshal, are assigned to a pair of unrelated cases in suburban Chicago, and while both involve persons now missing for several years, the cases couldn't be more different. While Evie opens old wounds in a close-knit neighborhood to find a missing college student, David searches for a private investigator working for a high-powered client. With a deep conviction that "justice for all" truly matters, Evie and David are unrelenting in their search for the truth. But Evie must also find answers to the questions that lie just beneath the surface in her personal life.
Dee Henderson is a prolific writer with a strong resume to back up why you should probably give any book she puts out a chance because her record of hits over misses speaks for itself. Admittedly I’m a bit biased because I’ve been a longtime fan of hers for that very reason. It an uncertain world it’s nice to have a little bit of certainty and picking up one of her books generally qualifies.
This particular novel is the second in her series starring main character Evie Blackwell who returns to explore what mysteries the Chicago area has to offer. Her plot is well written, thornily verbose but appealing in a way that is classic Henderson. Her pace remains steady so there isn’t a lot of ‘rollercoasterish’ moments where your pulse will race but she makes up for that by providing an intriguing story with plenty of clues to sort through on the way to hopefully clear out some cold cases.
It’s the perfect kind of series for people who like to pull things apart and watch as you search for that “Ah ha!” moment. As the characters move their way through this thorny task they will either find long needed but denied closure or more danger than they could expect.
You must read the story to find out how this journey will conclude but at least you’ll feel like it was time worth spent divulging in one of Henderson’s novels.
