We know you shouldn’t take your dragon to the library, but what about taking him out to dinner? After all, dragons need to eat too! But with firey breath, flapping wings, and pointy spikes, that might not be a good idea! Rhyming text and diverse characters bring the importance of dinner manners to a new level in this colorful picture book by Julie Gassman.
This book is incredibly cute!!
Julie Gassman has written an endearing tale using rhymes to add a lyrical quality to her book that will make it fun for kids to read and adults to read aloud. My kids made me read it a second time because whenever we got to the line “Do Not Take Your Dragon To Dinner” they shouted it out loud with glee and abandoned into laughter. I can see this has quickly become a new favorite we’ll be reading at bedtime with regularity.
Andy Elkerton did a wonderful job illustrating the art work so it truly brings out the fun of Gassman’s story. The colors are vibrant and well chosen as they seem to pop off the page. I was especially happy to see he chose to use such a wide diversity in gender and ethnicities when it came to the various people used to portray this story.
I thought the inclusion of learning manners in order to be a proper dinner guest was perfectly suited to the story especially one for kids so hopefully they’ll pick up on that bit and put the advice into practice rather than act like dragons at the dinner table.
